Not even close.

You know, that’s a really tough call. There’s no doubt in my mind that he could be apart of it. But the problem is that there are so many players who are worthy of being in a list of the twenty greatest offensive players.
You can’t just consider RBIs and home runs when you look for the greatest offensive players. A great offensive player needs to be someone who helped produce runs. Someone who got on base a lot and scored a lot of runs.
These are not in any such order, but these are players who I would expect to see in the top 20:
-Hank Aaron
-Babe Ruth
-Ty Cobb
-Mickey Mantle
-Willie Mays
-Jimmie Foxx
-Rickey Henderson
-Ted Williams
-Lou Gehrig
-Hank Greenberg
-Pete Rose
-George Sisler
-Roger Hornsby
-Joe DiMaggio
-Stan Musial
-Cap Anson
-Mel Ott
-Honus Wagner
-Tris Speaker
-Eddie Murray
Note that all of the players on the above list are retired. Only Henderson (eligible next year) and Rose (banned for life) are not in the Hall of Fame.
This doesn’t even account for players who are currently active who are sure to make the list in the near future. Ramirez fits into this group. I have a feeling that he could be a top twenty offensive player, but he would probably be near the bottom of the list.

of course, he’s in my top 10… he is a hitter, he works counts and he protects the plate well, he has a compact swing ad he can put it where he wants it. He always makes solid contact… he has more post season hrs than lou gehrig, he hits for power and average consistently.
edit:
people are sayign that he falls out of the top 20 in all these categories, but he’s almost 20 in a lot of em and Papi takes some of his RBIs away and the nasty cleveland lineup of the mid-late 90s took some away too… if you add all thos top 25 or so’s up how many other players have such diversity in their career #’s … so a guy that can do anything offensively as far as power and average is better than a guy that just hits avg or has 50 hrs a year and 100 k’s.

That’s a tough one. I’d put him in the 15-25 range. for everyone saying it’s about complete offensive numbers… Manny’s got those.
Manny Ramirez Career:
Homers – 510 (23rd) {after 3 more he’ll have 513 and be 20th}
RBI- 1672 (23rd)
BA- .313 (60th) {3rd amoung 24 players with 500 homers}
SLG- .590 (7th) {highest amoung active players}
he’s not just a home run hitter, he’s an rbi machine too. and he’s one of 3 players to hit 500 homers with a .313 or higher batting average. the players ahead of him? ted williams and babe ruth. good company there.
by the end of his career, he’ll be top 20.

On the outside looking in.
Edit – quick note to Salty. Don’t put too much stock in the number of “postseason” home runs a player has when comparing them to a player who played before 1969. Gehrig would have only had the World Series as an opportunity for the postseason – only 7 games possible. Players today, however, have a 5 game series followed by two 7 game series in which to pad their “postseason” stats. By the way, do you know how many postseason home runs Ted Williams hit? Exactly none.

No f*#@ing way! He would maybe be top 50, but I would have to sit down and make a list. Think about it: Aaron, Mays, Cobb, Mantle, Ruth, Brett, Rose, Bonds, Ripken, Jeter, Dimaggio, Ted Williams, Bench, Molitor, Yount, Biggio, Boggs, Pujols, Banks, Clemente. Those are just 20 players off the top of my head that were better than Manny offensively, and I’m sure there are alot more that I’m not thinking of.

Right now you can break down all of the hitting stats to see where he falls
23rd in HRs with 510
24th in RBIs with 1,666
T-82nd for Runs Scored with 1,405
36th in OBP with .410
all of those are career numbers, and nowhere on that list does he make a Top 20 appearance..he is good but to say top 20 is a bit much right now, maybe as his career progresses he can change some of those numbers
but right now i would say Top 30 all time

  El Ar wrote @ February 26th, 2010 at 6:33 pm

Somewhere in the 30-50 range. It’s hard to rank him higher due to his habit of avoiding certain pitchers, Joba Chamberlain and The Big Unit to name a couple. It’s no secret inside baseball he avoids playing when certain guys are pitching. The 20 greatest don’t duck anybody.

Better than him…Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Rogers Hornsby, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, pre-steroids five tool player Barry Bonds (gulp), the Mick, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner… and so on, but you could make an argument for him. He is a great hitter. HOF for sure.

Ramirez is 23rd n homeruns so based upon that criteria alone he would not make the top 20. If you factor in average, runs scored, doubles. triples, runs batted in, walks vs strikeouts, and stolen bases I’d put him in the top 100…iF i was feeling charitable.

For instance last night it was 7-4 and the red sox were losing. A guy was on first and second. A great chance for Manny to deliever. But instead he grounds into a dp. Then coming up in the ninth 7-4 score again and he cranks one over the green monster. He has great stats and an awesome swing. I think he deserves to be up there.
GO MANNY!

  Michael S wrote @ February 27th, 2010 at 6:40 am

He’s easily in the top 20, maybe the top 10.
He’s gotten an RBI in nearly 23% of his career at bats. Only the Babe, Gherig, Greenburg, Ted Williams, Jimmy Fox, and Mark McGwire are better.
He’s also in the top 10 all time in OPS and Slugging average.
